I've used that technique before and it worked pretty well. Also, here's a blog I wrote that seemed appropriate for this thread "The Tyranny of the Click Track" by Randy Hoexter

I tried it, but I achieve best result when only compressing a copy of overhead tracks and playing them along with my drum mix

There's a nice compressor plugin that incorporates that into its design with a "wet/dry" control - and it's cheap!  Check out http://www.ddmf.eu/ and look for "NYCompressor" under Products. Aaron Saloman http://www.aaronmusic.com

Is anyone familiar with the "New York" drum mix? That's what a producer friend of mine called it when you super-squash your entire drum mix through a compressor and then play that track at a low volume simultaneously with your regular drum mix.
