Bio
Ray began his musical journey at age five playing violin with his father and sisters, but the real magic started at age fourteen when he happened to find an electric guitar hidden in a closet of his home - and a willing friend who showed him a few chords. This was in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina, and there was no better way to pass the time.
The days following were like a blur, as he learned what each and every stomp box pedal could do to the sound of guitar plugged into a '63 Fender Bassman ....not to mention turned up to ear bleeding levels.
Years after, he found himself in the big city of Atlanta, GA. He started a blues band and hit the clubs running. Later, feeling restrained by playing only blues, he moved onto a band that played a funk/rock mix of music with lead singers who learned their talent as back-ups for Little Richard. They traveled around the southeast and Europe, playing much larger venues. They opened for well-known acts such as: Little Feat, Hootie and the Blowfish, Morris Day and the Time, Little Richard, The B-52's, Average White Band, and Mother Finest. They also enjoyed playing twice at the famed Whiskey-A-Go Go in Hollywood, California.
After the rigors of traveling and seeking a more spiritual path, Ray took a break from touring. He felt drawn to the Christian Rock genre, and formed a band called Hope's Anchor. They played for various churches and non-profit events, and won third place in the AtlantaFest contest for their track "Bend".
"Songs to Drink Coffee To" is a culmination of Ray's musical life. From a musicrevolution.com press release- "Most of the tracks in this collection are the result of a deep desire to connect", said Raymond Hemms. "I felt really compelled to produce music that made connections with people-- like sitting around in coffee shops and being with friends. You know... making memories. I'm really proud of how these tracks turned out and I am pleased to offer these on MusicRevolution.com", added Hemms.
