In the late 90’s, whenever clients asked me to compose electronica tracks, I would secretly roll my eyes. To me, the music of Kraftwerk and Vangelis lacked warmth. Sure, techno was easy enough to create in a home studio and it was lucrative to do projects without musician costs. But I didn’t get the genre.
That is, until I partied in London with my step-brother. I will never forget that night for as long as I live. The club was called Bagley’s – a huge multi-room warehouse where raves were held on a regular basis. The DJ spun progressive  trance tracks by artists like Paul Van Dyk; wherein pulsating themes built for minutes at time before exploding into four-on-the-floor grooves that penetrated my soul. Everybody was hugging each other. We didn’t leave the club until 10 AM the next morning. Narcotics may or may not have been involved.
After that, I understood techno.
I’ve enjoyed watching the genre come of age. My wife and I are hooked on Stranger Things (available on Netflix) which is scored entirely with blips, bleeps, beats, LFOs, oscillators and filters. Composers Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein discard my pre-London attitudes about synthesizers (“Use them only when real instruments aren’t in the budget!”). Instead, they let synths be synths. And it’s absolutely glorious.
That’s also what these MusicRevolution musicians did when they created the tracks included in our brand new collection – Modern Electronica 217. I guess they were with me that night in London. I wouldn’t remember:

In 1975, a young untested film director wrapped production on his first major studio film. He was feeling hopeless because although the script called for several shots of a giant shark, the mechanical creature created by his art department failed through most of the shoot. And because most of the principal photography was done on the ocean, the overages were massive.

Going into post-production, he didn’t have the shots to show the shark in a literal sense, so he was forced to merely suggest the shark through great acting performances by Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss; plus shots of the ocean…plus music composed by John Williams. Because the project had drifted so far away from the original plan, Steven Spielberg thought his career was toast.

In just 78 days, Jaws overtook The Godfather as the highest-grossing film in North America. It become the first film in history to earn over $100 million in the US. Almost thirty years after its release, Jaws was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry, being deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

If you’re a creative person who needs to get that first blockbuster movie under your belt without spending a lot of money, consider the horror/suspense genre; because your most valuable asset as a story teller is the audience’s fear of what they can’t see. That doesn’t cost you a dime.

The Blair Witch Project (1999) – shot for less than $60,000 – went to gross $250 million at the box office. At no point during that film does any violent act occur on screen. Everything is suggested, implied and heard.

“You’re guaranteed to make money doing a horror movie,” explains Craig Miller, film producer and chair of the Georgia Film, Music and Digital Entertainment Advisory Commission. “Lots of directors will start with a horror film because they have an audience, have a niche, and you can make them relatively inexpensively. Alfred Hitchcock made a career of never actually showing the horror. A talented filmmaker can scare the bejesus out of their audience with great acting, great editing and of course great music.”

So, dear filmmaker, MusicRevolution is proud to offer you this frightening collection of horror/terror tracks that will have your viewers chewing their nails….not because Halloween is right around the corner, but rather because your audience thinks it’s right around the corner waiting with a bloody axe.

TunesMap is an app you can run simultaneously with Apple Music to see visuals that correspond to whatever song you’re listening to. It was recently featured in the New York Times. This is an open letter to founder/creators G. Marc Roswell, Erik Loyer, Jon Blaufard, Nigel Grainge:
Gentlemen, as a person who’s built and managed a number of music-related services, I know the pain of hearing a distant relative give unsolicited user-experience advice at Thanksgiving dinner. But since I don’t know any of you, I’ll go ahead as your old Uncle Harvey and do just that.
Love the idea! I want your product to improve my life in two ways:

1) Give Record Label Art Directors A New Way to Blow My Mind

I want TunesMap to be a palette on which that genius graphic designer sitting at Warner Music right now can express how she/he feels about Clean Bandit’s upcoming single.
The artist in me has painfully learned that record labels are not The Bad Guy. Someone has to pay for the studio time. Someone has to tell the artist the album’s still not good enough. Someone had to tell the Doobie Brothers they weren’t going to the next level without Michael McDonald. And for the purposes of this discussion, someone has to market the artist.
Like that writer at the New York Times, I too get whimsical about sitting in a foggy room, holding a beautiful album cover in my hands and letting the label’s art department take me for a ride. Let young creatives at the label do this.
Like HBO and MTV, it will be so new that suits like us won’t be paying attention. Therefore it will be awesome.

2) Help My Family Explore Lyrical References

Last week Chance the Rapper debuted a new song on the Stephen Colbert Show. My teenage son can’t stop listening to it. The authenticity of the performance makes my wife cry every time she hears it. The 2nd verse starts with:
I think my little cousins want their cousin back; the automatic quarterback who doesn’t rap. They know I used to drive to Hammond for the Roman candles. Lied about coming back; the last straw that broke the camel.
It took me fifteen minutes of Google searches to learn that the state of Illinois – Chance the Rapper’s home state – has some of the strictest fireworks laws in the U.S. So if a teenager wants to blow up Roman Candles, he must drive 23 miles and cross states lines into Hammond, Indiana. It turns out Chicago is really close to Indiana. Geography lesson. Boom.
I expect your product to make it more enjoyable than ever for my son to make educational connections like this. Goodness knows he’ll take advice from Chance The Rapper over me any day.
So I suppose in 2017 your biggest challenge, from a content standpoint, will be differentiating your feed from the barrage of over-produced music videos and invasive pop-up ads that four billion of us have to endure each day.
Please take your product to a higher level than that. Gene Simmons said, “People listen with their eyes.” And artists are the only people left in this world who tell the truth.
I implore you, gentlemen. Use those principles to better connect us all with the music we love.
